Tradition Time With Eliza!

Liza’s Tradition Time: Special Snacks (And Special Memories)

For those who have been to camp before, you know that when you think of snack, you think of Peter Lai standing on the deck of the Dining Hall.

Peter knew that I loved ice cream and green (not red) apples and would always tell me the specific ice cream pop and the apple color for that day — because he knew that was what I was really wondering. That was Peter — he made everyone feel special and remembered things about them that no one else ever did! So Liza’s Tradition Time in this newsletter is dedicated to Peter, and all of the special snacks at Bryn Mawr.

Some of you might be able to guess my favorite special snack at camp: It is Ice Cream Night. I love ice cream (with TONS of rainbow sprinkles), and I love Ice Cream Night at camp for so many reasons., I love serving the whipped cream in the sundae line (spoiler alert: I definitely give too much). I love the tradition of singing at Ice Cream Night. After everyone has their sundae, Bunk One asks different girls in camp to sing a song. It is a time-honored tradition that was one of my favorites as a camper and remains one today.

Other special snacks at camp include Pizza Night, Chocolate Banana Night (ssshhhh…), churros, s’mores, funnel cakes, and hot pretzels! I know that I will miss seeing Peter’s smile every afternoon, evening, and special snack next summer… but I know that his spirit will always be with us, every time we go to the Dining Hall for snack!

Love,
Eliza

Fall 2022 Camp Staff News

Dan & Jane are already counting down the days to 2022! Dan is busy working on camp projects/improvements and Jane is helping with camper and staff recruitment. They have enjoyed seeing many campers at the Fall Family Day, Pop-Ups and home visits. In their personal life, Jane and Dan have been busy moving to a new home in Short Hills, New Jersey, and enjoying time with their grandchildren.

After a great round of Pop-Ups in the tri-state area, Eliza is full speed ahead in planning for 2022!  She is planning overnight trips and day trips, booking outside entertainment, and working on the camp calendar. Outside of the office, she is playing tennis, golf and pickleball!

Jocelyn is busy already hiring camp staff for 2022 and says it will be the best year yet! In addition to staffing she is enjoying spending time with her daughters and baking!

Kyle and Elena are hard at work assisting with maintenance, staffing and the conference center. Off camp, they are enjoying time with their daughter, Sasha!

Pilar is busy working on… A little bit of everything! She is helping with operations, staffing and planning for next summer, and she is gearing up for coaching this basketball season in Honesdale.

Becky is busy working with Dan on projects and updates at camp. When not at camp, she uses her free time to enjoy her hometown of Honesdale, PA!

This fall, Emily has been working at Bryn Mawr’s Conference Center full time, as well as recruiting and enrolling new Riding Campers for 2022. She is looking forward to helping Jocelyn with camp staffing this season as well. She has been spending her spare time with her husband Torrey and her two dogs, Delilah and Piper, who love going for walks at the farm!

Tradition Time With Eliza!

Liza’s Tradition Time: Anniversary Night

Picture this: It’s a warm summer Friday night. We are all in the Apple O’ watching the talent show. At the end of this special evening, after we have heard a story and shared random acts of kindness, there is a bonus: anniversary night.

On this night, we celebrate our returning campers and staff and highlight the number of years that they have been at camp. We give out a number of coveted Bryn Mawr items:

  • 3-Year Water Bottle
  • 4-Year Drawstring
  • 5-Year Jacket (an all time favorite)
  • 6-Year Blanket
  • 7-Year Watch
  • 8-Year Backpack

As a staff member, one of the coolest parts about returning to camp year after year is getting to watch campers grow up. While the items are all great, the most special part of the night for me is seeing the girls proudly come to the stage to be recognized for their years at camp. On this night each year, I get to take a step back and reflect on the experiences that I have the opportunity of watching each summer. Without fail, there are campers that shock me — I simply can’t believe that they are in their 5th, 6th, or 7th summer because I remember them starting in the Manor House! I love watching how all of our campers grow up at camp and this night is a reminder of that.

I am so excited for anniversary night 2021 (and every year beyond) to watch ALL OF YOU grow up at camp! Remember that when you get those special items — whether water bottles, drawstrings, jackets, blankets, watches or backpacks — they’re not just gifts. They are a reminder of how grateful we are to have YOU in our camp family.

How many years have you been at LBMC? Check out this list!

Love,
Eliza

Summer 2021: Back and Better!

The countdown to Summer 2021 is ON, and we can’t wait to be back at camp together!

Although there will be some changes this summer, we want you to know that camp will still be camp! We will still have songs and spirit, we will still celebrate our favorite traditions, and we will make just as many unforgettable memories as ever.

If there has ever been a time when we all REALLY needed a summer at camp, this is it! We have been working hard to plan for a “safe haven” where we can enjoy all the magic of a Bryn Mawr summer. Your parents will be getting details about these plans very soon.

In the past year, we have all gotten used to new ways of doing things. School, sports, activities, holidays — everything has been a little different (or sometimes a lot different). Throughout all of it, we have seen all of our Angels living the Angel Code values of Loyalty, Beauty, Merit and Comradeship by adapting to new routines, respecting new rules, and most of all, by being caring and compassionate toward others. Every change that you made, from wearing masks to distance learning, helps protect other people, and that’s an amazing way to live the Angel Code!

As we get ready to welcome everyone back to Bryn Mawr, we want to take a moment to talk about what this summer will be like. We always ask for honesty from our campers, so we want to be very honest ourselves: This summer at camp will be different from past summers. There will be new ways of doing things and changes to some of our regular routines. It will probably take all of us some time to get used to these new routines — even Jane and Dan! We will all learn and adapt together to keep doing what we have been doing since last year: looking out for others by staying safe and staying healthy!

No matter what, the Alma Mater reminds us that camp will always be camp — “if Bryn Mawr means as much to you as Bryn Mawr means to me!”
